Can hormone levels be checked during menstruation?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I need to know if I can test my hormone levels while menstruating. I have been on bio-identical hormones for three months, and it is time to re-test, but my cycle is not regular. I began what I thought was my cycle 19 days ago, but tomorrow is the day I need to do the blood test, and I seem to be getting some heavier bleeding. So, I am unsure if I can test as I have been lightly bleeding for 19 days. Do I skip the testing, wait to stop bleeding, or test on day 20 like initially planned? I am unsure if I should consider today's day one since it seems like an actual period. Then what the heck were the last 18 days about? I need the results to be accurate because the test is not cheap.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You should consult your gynecologist without any further delay and proceed with tests. If required, it is likely to suggest an ultrasound (abdomen or pelvis) along with a complete blood count and other tests, including a diagnostic hysteroscopy, as necessary, to understand the underlying cause behind the light bleed for the last 19 days. In the meantime, do keep your diet and lifestyle streamlined and take adequate rest. Also, continue your current medications as advised by your doctor. Any strenuous or stressful activity is best avoided.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
