Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My height is 5'8" and my weight is 207.23 Ibs. Before four months I was diagnosed with acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis (ADEM), which is an autoimmune disease. My hands and legs did not work at that time. I have consulted a neurologist for the treatment of the same. The MRI scan of the brain revealed that there are multiple patches in the white matter region of the brain. The first MRI was done four months ago and in the second MRI, the patches still exist and no change is seen in the brain. Both MRI reports are attached here for your reference. Someone told me that Ayurveda is beneficial in this type of case. So, I have contacted my friend who is a BAMS doctor. He did not check me physically as I am away and gave me some medicines. They are Rasraj ras, Yogendra ras, and Mukta Pishti. These are in powder form and he advised me to consume them along with honey for 15 days morning and evening after food. He has also given me Shankhpushpi to take three times daily after food and two oils for massage, which are Prasarini tel and Mahamash tel. They both should be applied to the affected area. I have seen improvement after I start taking Ayurveda medicines. I want to know whether ADEM can get cured through Ayurveda.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your MRI report (attachment removed to protect patient identity). ADEM is an autoimmune disorder characterized by inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.In this disorder, our body's protective mechanism that is immunity system will stand against the body and start destructing their own tissues. Ayurveda describes such type of disease to be due to vitiated vata dosha accompanied by other pitta and kapha dosha. Along with this, there is always association of ama dosha (toxins) with autoimmune diseases.

Ayurveda medicines which you are taking are quite effective in this disorder. But, there are some suggestions that you can add in your treatment. The suggestions are as follows.

  1. You can take Balarishta and Saraswatarishta, 2 tsp from each, add 4 tsp of water to it and take after meal.
  2. You can take Anu taila (Jivanti, Shatavari, Daruharidra, Ushira) (nasal drops), two drops in each nostril once daily. The procedure of nasya should be learned from Ayurveda physician.
  3. You can take 0.18 oz of Ashwagandha churna (Ashwagandha, Ginger, Pippali) twice daily with milk.

Apart from this, there are some panchakarma therapies that may help you in improving from ADEM. These are shirodhara, nasya and shirobasti.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
