What could be the cause of severe pain in the knee post surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got an injury in my left knee for which I had undergone ACL reconstruction surgery (hamstring graft). Now, I have slight pain when I stretch my leg. There is severe pain when I press the place where the cut for drilling was made (on the right side of the knee). I am afraid if the screw used is displaced or it has undergone damage.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understood your query.

Pain after surgery is quite usual because many patients struggle with recovery after a hamstring graft procedure. Problems include strengthening of the quadriceps, T-band, and calf. Proper healing procedures and medical care (physical therapy) are essential to regain strength. Approximately six weeks is required for the bone to attach to the graft. I suggest you do an X-ray.

Hope it helps.

Thanks and regards.
