Liver surgery is done to treat liver cancer, either benign or malignant. The liver is partially or wholly removed, or a donor's liver is transplanted. Liver resection is when the liver tumor is removed along with some of the surrounding tissue. This is only done for small cancer, if the liver is otherwise healthy, and if cancer has not spread. If one of the lobes of the liver is removed, it is called lobectomy. If the liver is healthy and you do not have cirrhosis, then the resected portion will grow back. In people with hepatocellular liver cancer, a liver transplant is done.
