Imiquimod is an immune response modifier and is used to treat skin conditions like basal cell carcinoma (skin cancer), genital warts, and actinic keratosis (precancerous growth caused due to excessive sun exposure). It works by activating the immune system to work against the skin growth. It is available as a topical cream and should be applied once a day or as prescribed by the doctor. The common local side effects include blisters, burning sensation, skin redness, itching, dry skin, scabbing, scaling, skin ulcerations, and swelling. Systemic side effects include headache, fever, back pain, tiredness, and flu-like symptoms like nausea, fever, chills, and muscle weakness.
