Angioplasty is a minimally invasive procedure used to widen narrowed and obstructed blood vessels. It is used to resume normal blood flow in atherosclerosis. Here, a deflated balloon is attached to a catheter, which is carefully guided through the affected blood vessel and then the balloon is inflated. This expands the blood vessel and the surrounding muscles, thus restoring proper blood flow. Sometimes, a stent is placed so that the blood vessel remains patent, and the balloon is deflated and withdrawn. The different types of angioplasty are coronary angioplasty, peripheral angioplasty, carotid angioplasty, renal artery angioplasty, and venous angioplasty. The risks associated are embolization, arterial rupture, and hematoma.
